Companies responsible for verifying environmental, social, and governance (ESG) claims may be required to adhere to a new ethics code to address greenwashing, according to the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA).
With the rise of investments in funds boasting green credentials, there is a growing concern about misleading practices, known as greenwashing.
To tackle this, the IESBA has proposed revisions and additions to its ethics standards for auditing sustainability information from companies.
These standards aim to set best practices for verifying sustainability claims, addressing issues like accounting for the impact of corporate actions on emissions, relying on external experts, and handling conflicts of interest.
The proposed standards will be open for public consultation until May and are expected to complement new technical assurance standards from the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board.
