Green Plains announced that it’s made progress on its Advantage Nebraska carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) strategy. The ethanol producing company has successfully acquired all rights of way for the project. The company also announced that the lateral construction is underway now.
Aiming for Operational Status by 2025
Green Plains expects Advantage Nebraska to become fully operational in the second half of 2025. This project positions the company as a leader in low-carbon ethanol production using CCS in the US. It was reported in a company announcement that the move would help permanently capture and store 800,000 tons of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) per annum from Nebraska facilities.

The company’s facilities in Central City, Wood River, and York will initially sequester 800,000 tons of CO2 each year. However, the company has designed the system to be scalable, potentially sequestering up to 1.2 million tons annually.
Support from US Government Initiatives
The introduction of the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit by the US Department of Treasury provides substantial support for carbon reduction projects. The 45Z GREET model also offers a 32-point reduction in carbon intensity (CI) scores for US corn ethanol producers using CCS.
Advantage Nebraska and Renewable Diesel
Green Plains is also exploring new opportunities by leveraging renewable corn oil (distillers corn oil, or DCO) for renewable diesel production. The 45Z model shows a 25-point CI advantage for DCO over soybean oil, boosting Green Plains’ position in the renewable fuels market.
Expanding Clean Energy Leadership
The company sees carbon capture as an important aspect of its growth. The compay believes that reducing its ethanol CI by more than half will deliver great value to shareholders. Plus, the company also has plans to expand into other markets such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). These plans are part of the company’s broader efforts to increase its presence in the clean energy space.
Green Plains is actively indulging in carbon capture technology. It intends to position itself at the forefront of the low carbon ethanol production. The Advantage Nebraska project and the government incentives allow Green Plains to achieve that goal.
