Mati Carbon has delivered 420 tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits to Frontier, marking a significant milestone. This is the largest permanent CDR delivery by a company from the global south, highlighting the potential of innovative carbon removal methods.
This achievement builds on a successful collaboration with Frontier in January 2024, when Mati Carbon delivered 50 tons of CO2 removal. The company specializes in enhanced rock weathering (ERW), a method that involves spreading crushed basalt rock dust on agricultural fields, particularly focusing on smallholder rice paddies.
How Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) Works
The basalt dust, a byproduct from aggregate mines, reacts with soil CO2 and carbonic acid when applied to farmland. This reaction forms bicarbonate ions, which then travel to oceans or deep aquifers. Once there, they enable permanent carbon storage for over 10,000 years.

Mati Carbon’s Expansion into India and Beyond
Mati Carbon’s focus on both carbon removal and improving the climate resilience of agricultural workers from the global south has driven its expansion. After debuting in India, the company scaled its ERW operations to an industrial level. In November 2024, Mati expanded its reach further, entering Zambia and Tanzania.
CEO’s Comments on ERW Success
Mati Carbon’s CEO, Shantanu Agrawal, highlighted that this recent delivery to Frontier demonstrates the scalability of ERW in the global south. He emphasized that the region’s favorable weather and soil conditions make it an ideal location for this type of carbon removal. Agrawal also noted that the company’s efforts are benefiting smallholder farmers, with improvements in crop yields and soil health.
Industry Recognition and Achievements
In 2024, Mati Carbon gained considerable recognition in the carbon removal industry. The company won the Bezos Earth Fund Greenhouse Gas Removal Ideation Prize and reached the XPRIZE Carbon Removal Finals. Additionally, Mati became a portfolio member of Milkywire’s Climate Transformation Fund and made it to the Phase 1 Semifinalists in the DOE’s Carbon Dioxide Removal Purchase Pilot Prize.
This recognition solidifies Mati Carbon’s position as a leader in carbon removal and climate resilience, particularly in the global south.
