Uniper, an energy company, entered into a significant nine-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with a major international industrial gas producer.
This agreement aims to provide 25 gigawatt hours (GWh) of hydropower from Germany to support the ongoing efforts to decarbonise the Rhine-Ruhr industrial region.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2025 with an initial annual volume of 25 GWh, which will progressively increase to 75 GWh per year starting in 2027 until the end of the contract in 2033.

Carsten Poppinga, the CCO of Uniper, said, “Climate change is forcing companies to reduce their CO2 emissions. This contract demonstrates Uniper’s ability to meet customer needs and confirms its role as a reliable partner in the energy transition.”
He added, “Our flexible energy generation assets support the restructuring of the energy industry while ensuring security of supply. We are delighted that our PPA is helping to accelerate the decarbonisation of a large German industrial region. This is another step on Uniper’s path towards becoming a leading provider of green molecules and power products.”

The green power supplied under the PPA will support the production of green hydrogen, contributing to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions from energy-intensive industries.
This agreement is in line with Germany’s broader goals of transitioning to cleaner energy sources and reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.
