According to a press release by ACWA Power, the company and the Tunisian Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a potential project that could produce up to “600,000” tons of green hydrogen per year in three phases to be exported to Europe.
ACWA Power primarily works with developing, investing and the operation of power generation and desalinating water plants.
The MoU was signed by Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy and Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power.
The agreement, as per the release, dictates that ACWA Power will be responsible for the development, operation, and maintenance of 12 gigawatts of renewable energy electricity generation units.
The responsibility includes the management of storage systems and transmission lines, as well as water desalination plants, electrolyzers, and infrastructure needed to connect to the main pipeline.

The development will happen in two phases. The first phases will revolve around the installation of 4GW of renewable energy units, 2GW of electrolyser capacity, and battery storage facilities to produce 200,000 tons per year of green hydrogen.
The goal is to export the green hydrogen produced through the South2 Corridor, a hydrogen pipeline project led by European Transmission System Operators (TSOs).
This agreement paves the way for an important project for Tunisia as the project aligns with Tunisia’s National Strategy for the Development of Green Hydrogen and its Derivatives. The strategy, launched in 2023, includes an action plan for “exporting more than 6 million tons of green hydrogen to Europe by 2050”, as per the release.
