Amazon and Iberdrola, among the largest entities in the respective energy and tech sectors, have announced expanding their partnership by finalizing a number of new Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for 476 MW in renewable energy worldwide. The investments will spread across five countries, marking a pivotal step in both companies’ paths to net-zero emissions.
New Agreements Across Portugal and Spain
The latest agreements bring Amazon’s renewable energy procurements into new regions, which include its very first PPA in Portugal. It has secured 219 MW of wind power from Iberdrola’s Tâmega Wind Complex, Portugal’s largest wind farm. A segment of Iberdrola’s €350m green energy investment, it forms a complicated structure. At peak construction time, it would create over 700 jobs with the wind farm set to fuel about 128,000 households annually, estimated to start in early 2025.
In Spain, Amazon has also secured two major PPAs amounting to 257 MW of solar and wind energy. The Ciudad Rodrigo solar plant in Salamanca will produce 212MW capable of powering 150,000 homes annually. Investment in this facility will also support over 800 jobs during peak construction.Iberdrola will also restore the town square in Ciudad Rodrigo in its local community engagement.
Valdemoro wind farm, located in Burgos, will contribute 45 MW of clean energy and allow around 48,000 households to be supplied annually. There are 11 turbines at a height of 107.5 meters in this wind farm and will generate 145 peak construction jobs.
Boosting renewable energy capacity globally
These new projects help Amazon reach its goal of 100% renewable energy, matching global electricity consumption by 2025. According to Bloomberg NEF, Amazon is the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy across more than 600 solar and wind projects worldwide. This PPA deal strengthens Amazon’s lead in the renewable energy space further.
Iberdrola remains a leading force in Europe’s renewable energy market, ranked top PPA seller for the second year by Pexapark.
Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, said, “Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals, and support Europe’s transition to more sustainable energy sources.”
She added, “We are excited to further support Iberdrola in its growth plans, leveraging the scalability and services of AWS in data and AI. We are working with Iberdrola to provide a modern virtual desktop platform for their employees and drive innovation across business lines to accelerate innovation and delivery, and achieve our goals faster.”

AI and Cloud Collaboration Drive Efficiency
In addition, Amazon and Iberdrola are deepening their collaboration in cloud technology and AI. In August 2024, Iberdrola selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider to optimize grid operations and wind farm performance. Iberdrola uses AWS AI to improve grid connections, optimize turbine placement, and enhance weather forecasting to boost energy production.
