Bekaert, announced that it has signed a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement(VPPA) in Romania with Rezolv Energy, an independent power producer in Central and Southeastern Europe.
This agreement represents one of the largest PPAs signed in the region, according to the announcement.
According to the agreement, Bekaert, a steel wire transformation and coating technology company, will purchase 100 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of additional renewable power each year.
The power purchased will aid in reducing annual emissions by more than 41,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
Michael Hamilton, VP of Commodities, Bekaert, said, “We are delighted to sign this exciting project in Romania with Rezolv. This agreement not only enhances our existing renewable energy portfolio but also exemplifies our commitment to sustainability and creating value for all of our stakeholders.”
He added, “By integrating renewable energy sources into our operations, we are taking significant steps towards a greener future for our company and the customers we serve.”

The purchased power will be supplied through the 461MW ‘VIFOR’ wind farm, developed by Rezolv and Low Carbon in Buzău County, Romania.
Once fully operational, the VIFOR wind farm will become one of Europe’s largest onshore wind farms. The wind farm will reportedly generate sufficient energy to power 270,000 homes and will help reduce nearly 540,000 tons of CO2e annually.
The first phase of the wind farm will install 192 Megawatts (MW) in capacity, which will later be expanded to 461 MW in phase 2.
The construction of the wind farm is expected to be completed within 18 months, and the project is expected to come online before the end of 2025.
