BP and Iberdola approved constructing a 25-megawatt (MW) green hydrogen project at BP’s Castellon refinery.
The project, a collaboration under their joint venture Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., is expected to become operational in the second half of 2026, and marks the first hydrogen initiative undertaken jointly by both companies.
The Technology Institute of Energy (ITE) is a partner in this green hydrogen initiative, which has received €15 million in funding from the Spanish Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, made possible by NextGenerationEU funds from the European Union.
The project was unveiled in July 2024 during a ceremony commemorating the signing of BP and Iberdrola’s final investment agreement.

When operating at full capacity, the facility will create 2,800 tons of green hydrogen yearly, which will partially replace the grey hydrogen currently produced from natural gas.
Additionally, the plant is anticipated to reduce CO2 emissions by 23,000 tons annually, which is the equivalent of removing 5,000 automobiles from the road.
Millán Garcia-Tola, Global Director of Hydrogen in Iberdrola said, “The plant will convert 200 GWh/yr of Iberdrola’s renewable energy into green hydrogen that will contribute to bp’s decarbonization strategy, in another example of close collaboration between both companies, reliable partners that share values as long term decarbonization commitment. Iberdrola will apply all the experience of its existing green hydrogen plants to optimize and accelerate the development of this project”.

The plant will use proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology provided by Plug Power to convert 200 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola’s solar and wind installations annually.
The generated green hydrogen will meet European RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin) regulations.
Iberdrola recently established several long-term collaborations with foreign investors and businesses, such as Norges Bank, Masdar, and GIC, to promote renewable energy and energy infrastructure.
