Environment Minister Stephen Guilbeault announced on Thursday that Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 increased by a smaller amount than anticipated, following the peak of the pandemic. This indicated that the country is progressing towards achieving its climate objectives.
“(This) report confirms we have bent the curve, and emissions remain on a long-term downward track while we grow a clean, sustainable, and strong economy,” said Guilbeault.

“It appears the suite of measures introduced by the Government of Canada over the last several years is starting to make a notable dent in our overall emissions,” said the Pembina Institute green think tank.
Despite being a major oil and gas producer, Canada has consistently failed to meet its greenhouse gas emission targets.

The Liberal government, having implemented numerous measures to tackle climate change and promote renewable energy, asserts that its latest annual performance report indicates the country is progressing as scheduled towards reducing emissions by 40% to 45% below 2005 levels by 2030.
