Climate lawsuit against Italy’s Eni delayed due to jurisdictional review request
A decision on a lawsuit filed by Greenpeace and ReCommon against Italy’s Eni, an energy group, for its role in contributing to climate change through its fossil fuel businesses will be delayed beyond September, a press release said.
ENI stated that the postponement comes after the two environmental groups requested a jurisdictional review of the Italian case.
The press release added that the presiding judge had already set the hearing for the decision on September 13, 2024.
ENI has responded to the jurisdictional review request, expressing its disagreement with the move. The company believes that the request, aimed at obtaining a suspension of the lawsuit, is unfounded.
The energy company said, “Greenpeace and ReCommon’s request risks causing a lengthy suspension of the decision that otherwise would have been expected shortly.”

The two environmental groups plan to set out their next legal steps during an online press conference soon. They had been seeking the right to claim damages from Eni and to force a rethink of its business strategy.
ENI stated that the lawsuit was unfounded and added that it had provided the court with all the elements proving its proper conduct, and its transformation and decarbonization strategy, publishing all related documents as well on its website.
