According to a report released on Thursday by the prominent think tank REN21, the global addition of renewable energy capacity fell short of the necessary levels to meet climate objectives.
Despite a record-breaking increase of 36% in global renewable capacity additions, reaching approximately 473 gigawatts (GW), challenges such as escalating energy demand and inadequate grid infrastructure hindered the transition away from fossil fuels.
REN21, headquartered in Paris and comprising national governments and industry associations, underscored these findings.

“The reality is that energy demand has increased at the same time, especially in China, India and other developing economies,” said Rana Adib, REN21’s Executive Secretary.
“We have the technology – 80% of CO2 emissions can be abated with existing technology – but we need the political will,” Adib added.
