Mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd has partnered with renewable energy company Windlab to purchase a majority of the electricity from its upcoming 1.4-gigawatt wind energy project in Queensland.
Rio Tinto will acquire 80% of the power generated by the Bungaban wind energy project over the next 25 years.
Still in its early stages, the project will be constructed and managed by Windlab in Queensland, pending development and grid connection approvals.
Chief Executive of Rio Tinto, Jakob Stausholm, said, “This agreement with Windlab builds on our momentum in our work to repower our Gladstone operations and provide a sustainable future for heavy industry in Central Queensland.”
Rio Tinto stated that construction for the Bungaban project is set to begin in late 2025, with electricity production anticipated by 2029.
