Stanwell is collaborating with a leading global pumped hydro operator to acquire the Cressbrook Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) Project, commonly referred to as ‘Big T,’ from BE Power, the developer behind the project.
Located at Lake Cressbrook, about 45 kilometers northeast of Toowoomba, this initiative is in the early development phases.
The joint venture aims to advance the project toward a final investment decision, with Stanwell responsible for dispatching the energy produced by Cressbrook PHES.

Michael O’Rourke, Stanwell’s Chief Executive Officer, said, “The development of medium duration energy storage, like pumped hydro, is crucial to enable the continued build out of renewable energy generation.”
He added, “Cressbrook PHES also supports the ongoing development of our Tarong Clean Energy Hub.”

The project is set to deliver substantial advantages to the Toowoomba and Somerset regions, generating 350 construction jobs and requiring 13 operational positions throughout its lifespan.
Additionally, Stanwell’s Asset Maintenance Company will prioritize service and maintenance of the facility over its anticipated 50-year operational period.
The venture will seek further investment partners to support construction funding. Cressbrook PHES is projected to begin operations in mid-2033 and is expected to fulfil approximately 25 per cent of Stanwell’s future energy storage needs.
