Synhelion launches world’s first solar-powered synthetic fuel plant
According to a press release, Synhelion, a clean energy company, inaugurated the world’s first industrial-scale plant to make synthetic fuels using solar heat.
Named DAWN and located in Jülich, Germany, this facility consists of a solar tower standing 20 meters tall alongside a mirror field. This system enables cost-efficient solar production, around the clock, the release mentions.
The synthetic fuel plant marks the first time the company’s inventions are being integrated on such a large scale.
The company release mentions that solar fuels have the capacity to replace fossil fuels and are entirely “compatible with the existing fuel infrastructure”.

Solar fuels are compatible with storage, transportation, internal combustion, and aircraft engines.
Heike Birlenbach, Chief Commercial Officer of Swiss International Air Lines, said, “The large-scale use of sustainable aviation fuels is one of the most important measures to achieve the CO2 targets in aviation. The inauguration of DAWN marks a milestone in this process.”
He added, “As strategic partners of Synhelion, Lufthansa Group and SWISS as investors are proud to support the market introduction of solar fuels and congratulate Synhelion on this extraordinary achievement.”

According to the release, the DAWN plant is scheduled to commence operations in 2024 and is expected to yield several thousand litres of synthetic fuel annually.
On-site, DAWN will produce synthetic crude oil, also known as syncrude. The product is reportedly suitable for transportation and can be processed into “certified fuels in a conventional oil refinery,” according to the release.
This implies that the clean energy firm will not only produce kerosene for aviation but also solar gasoline and solar diesel for utilization in road transportation and shipping applications.
Dr Philipp Furler, CEO and Co-Founder of Synhelion said, “Today is a historic day for Synhelion. The inauguration of DAWN marks the beginning of the era of solar fuels – a turning point for sustainable transportation. Our founding dream of producing renewable fuels from solar energy is becoming a reality. We are immensely proud of our great team and would like to thank all of our pioneers who have made this once seemingly impossible idea possible.”
