Tata Power, one of India’s largest integrated power company, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Assam to promote renewable energy and sustainable growth in the state. Tata Power signed the MoU at Advantage Assam 2.0, taking a big step toward strengthening the state’s clean energy future.
Massive Renewable Energy Investment in Assam
As per the MoU, Tata Power will help develop up to 5000 MW of renewable energy schemes, such as solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage, with an investment of ₹ 30,000 crores in a period of five years. The MoU was signed by Dr. Krishna Kumar Dwivedi, Principal Secretary Power, Assam Government, and Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, in the presence of Assam’s Chief Minister, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, and other top officials.

In addition, Assam’s government will enable Group Captive sites for industries and tea gardens to access clean energy, further promoting renewable energy adoption. The government is also offering single-window clearances for statutory approvals, financial incentives, and collaboration with research institutions to spur innovation within the renewable energy sector.
Progress in Assam’s Renewable Energy Sector
Assam has progressed remarkably in renewable energy, leveraging its rich natural resources to harness a renewable energy potential of 14,487 MW, with solar power leading the way. The state is working towards a 500 MW solar capacity by 2027, which fits perfectly with Tata Power’s vision to drive the state’s clean energy transition.
Tata Power’s subsidiary, Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd., has signed an independent MoU with Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) as well. This partnership aims to accelerate rooftop solar installations under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGY) while generating 3,000 direct employment opportunities, thereby augmenting Assam’s clean energy and economic development.
