Tata Power Solar, a cell and module manufacturer under Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd, announced the start of commercial production from its 2 gigawatts (GW) solar cell line at its manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.
The Tirunelveli facility, which started manufacturing solar modules earlier this year, will increase its solar cell capacity to 4GW within the next few months.
Since its launch in October 2023, the plant has already produced 1,250 MW of solar modules.
With its current 2GW capacity, solar cell production is expected to improve Tata Power’s ability to supply the increasing demand for solar components made in the country.
The production of solar cells supports India’s goal of clean energy and reducing reliance on imports.

Dr. Praveer Sinha, the CEO and MD of Tata Power said, “The commencement of cell production at our Tirunelveli plant is a significant step towards indigenisation in the solar value chain and achieving self-sufficiency.”
He added, “We are committed to making solar power accessible to all and ensuring a bright future for India, powered by renewable energy. We believe that this plant will lead the way in supporting the country’s vision for a Net-Zero carbon future.”
The plant is equipped with TOPCon and Mono Perc technology, allowing it to manufacture high-efficiency solar cells and modules listed in the Government’s Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM).

Tata Power has made a significant investment of ₹4,300 crore in the Tirunelveli facility to support the solar energy sector, focusing on solar rooftop and utility-scale projects.
With a 20% market share, the company aims to expand further through initiatives like PM Surya Ghar Yojana.
Initially, the solar products from the Tamil Nadu facility will be used for the company’s existing projects to strengthen its supply chain.
Additionally, the company plans to explore opportunities for broader market distribution.
