As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the US Department of Energy (DOE) committed up to $2.2 billion to support the development of two major Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs). These initiatives aim to accelerate clean hydrogen deployment, reduce fossil fuel reliance, create economic opportunities, and support climate goals.
Major Funding for Gulf Coast and Midwest Hydrogen Hubs
The DOE will invest up to $1.2 billion in the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub, led by HyVelocity, and up to $1 billion in the Midwest Hydrogen Hub, led by the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen LLC (MachH2). These H2Hubs are a part of DOE’s broader Hydrogen Hubs program, created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to establish a nationwide network of clean hydrogen producers, consumers, and infrastructure.
These investments follow three initial H2Hub awards, marking a significant push to position hydrogen as a key energy transition player. The program reduces carbon emissions, boosts energy security, and creates jobs by utilizing hydrogen as a clean fuel across sectors.

Unlocking the Potential of Clean Hydrogen
The Gulf Coast and Midwest H2Hubs will produce low-cost, clean hydrogen from diverse energy sources, decarbonizing key industries. These H2Hubs will reduce emissions, support renewable power expansion, and offer long-term energy storage. DOE funding will drive private investment, create jobs, and support national decarbonization goals.
The Midwest Hydrogen Hub will decarbonize industries in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan, including steel, manufacturing, and transportation. Using wind, natural gas, and nuclear energy, it will create 12,000 jobs and support regional economic revival.

Strengthening Local Economies and Environmental Benefits
The DOE’s clean hydrogen investment is a major US initiative to boost manufacturing and job creation. The seven H2Hubs will produce millions of metric tons of hydrogen annually, supporting 2030 production goals, emission reductions, and job creation. Each H2Hub will engage communities and ensure benefits are widely shared through virtual briefings and labour opportunities.
The DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations will manage the H2Hubs program, overseeing job creation, emission reductions, and community benefits. This program represents a crucial step in the Biden-Harris Administration’s broader strategy to combat climate change and build a more sustainable, equitable energy future.
