Occidental Petroleum and BHE Renewables, a subsidiary of Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, announced that they were working on a joint venture to extract lithium, according to a press release by Occidental Petroleum.
Berkshire Hathaway owns nearly a stake of $14 billion in Occidental Petroleum.
According to the release, the joint venture is formed to demonstrate and deploy “TerraLithium’s Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) and associated technologies to extract and commercially produce high-purity lithium compounds from geothermal brine.”
The release mentions that the joint venture involves a project at BHE Renewables’ Imperial Valley geothermal facility, which aims to convey the “feasibility of using the TerraLithium DLE technology to produce lithium in an environmentally safe manner.”
Occidental Petroleum-owned TerraLithium will employ its patented DLE technologies to extract and commercially produce lithium compounds of the highest purity at Berkshire’s geothermal facility situated in California.
According to the release, BHE Renewables runs 10 geothermal power plants in California’s Imperial Valley. These units utilize about 50,000 gallons of lithium-rich brine per minute to generate 354 MW (megawatts) of clean energy.

The joint venture also intends to license the technology and construct commercial lithium production facilities outside the Imperial Valley.
The release also mentioned that upon the completion of the demonstration, BHE has plans to “build, own and operate commercial lithium production facilities” in California’s Imperial Valley.
The release also featured statements from top officials. Alicia Knapp, President and CEO of BHE Renewables, said, “This joint venture with TerraLithium represents a significant advancement in BHE Renewables’ commitment to pursuing commercial lithium production that is environmentally safe, commercially viable and leads to good outcomes for the Imperial Valley community,”
She added, “We are excited to be working with Occidental on this incredible opportunity to make the Imperial Valley a global leader in lithium production.”
