The COP29 Green Zone continued to showcase innovative solutions for climate action, hosting a series of events alongside the main negotiations in the Blue Zone. One of the highlights was a joint discussion that examined the transformative potential of sustainable tourism, which the Azerbaijan Tourism Board and the COP29 Azerbaijan Operating Company hosted.

Driving Climate Action in Tourism
The “Enhanced Climate Action in Tourism: Innovative Solutions and Way Forward” session brought together tourism experts to discuss how the sector can minimize its environmental impact while fostering local economic growth and preserving cultural heritage.
Moderated by Virginia Fernandez-Trapa, Programme Officer for the Sustainable Development of Tourism Department at the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the panel featured prominent voices in tourism and sustainability. Speakers included Gunay Bayramova, Head of Tourism Policy and Strategy at Azerbaijan’s State Tourism Agency; Heitor Kadri, Head of the International Relations Department at Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism; and Erika Harms, Global Director of Sustainability at Iberostar Group.
Also speaking were Shannon Gihan, Chief TreadRight & Sustainability Officer for The Travel Corporation; Amy Lewis, Operations Senior Specialist at the Climate Change Division of the Inter-American Development Bank.
The discussion focused on practical ways to lower carbon emissions, save biodiversity, and balance environmental responsibilities with economic objectives. Panelists highlighted ecotourism, green infrastructure adoption, and responsible travel practices as crucial to furthering sustainability in the tourism sector,
