The European Investment Bank(EIB) will unveil a series of key initiatives to enhance global environmental protection during the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024. Â
This event, which marks the 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, will bring together global leaders to address pressing biodiversity challenges.
At COP16, the EIB will unveil a new collaboration with WWF to advance natural solutions that protect biodiversity and enhance climate resilience.
The goal of this partnership is to expand efforts to protect ecosystems while strengthening communities’ ability to adapt to climate change.
Additionally, the EIB aims to strengthen its cooperation with the European Environment Agency (EEA) to support vital biodiversity objectives and promote environmental sustainability and climate action.
A key highlight of the conference will be the presentation of a joint survey conducted by the EIB and the Association of Public Development Banks of Latin America and the Caribbean (ALIDE).
This survey will explore how public development banks in Europe and Latin America are contributing to the green transition, emphasising the importance of sustainable finance in driving regional climate initiatives.
Ambroise Fayolle, the EIB Vice President, said, “The role of finance will be front and centre of the COP16 discussions on how to meet the world’s goals in supporting biodiversity.”Â
He added, “We must act with urgency to reduce financial flows to activities that harm nature and scale up financing to projects that have a positive impact on the environment. Doing so is central to overcoming the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.”
