Eni, the Italian multinational energy company, has signed an agreement with Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Water and Forests to launch a project to preserve and restore the country’s forest areas. This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat deforestation and promote environmental sustainability.
Project Scope and Objectives
The new project will focus on 14 forest areas in the Lagunes and Comoé regions, covering 155,000 hectares. This initiative follows a feasibility study conducted in September 2022, which involved local stakeholders to ensure alignment with national priorities.
The agreement outlines two key intervention areas. The first, Forest Conservation, focuses on safeguarding forest heritage and biodiversity by enhancing control measures against deforestation, fires, and poaching. A detailed awareness and training program will assist local communities and relevant institutions.
The second area, Forest Restoration, aims to restore 130,000 hectares of degraded land by planting 12 million native trees. This effort will be supported by agro-forestry practices that encourage sustainable farming and boost land productivity for local communities.

Alignment with National and Global Goals
The forest preservation and restoration project aligns with Côte d’Ivoire’s National Development Plans and its strategy to reduce deforestation and emissions. The initiative also advances the country’s environmental objectives, including restoring forest areas as part of a wider climate change action plan.
For Eni, this project is in line with the company’s decarbonization efforts. It specifically supports its goal of achieving zero net upstream emissions (Scope 1 and 2) in the Baleine development. Through its partnership with Ivorian authorities, Eni aims to foster local environmental sustainability and contribute to global climate objectives.

The project prioritizes the active involvement of local communities. In addition to its environmental objectives, it encourages agro-forestry practices that provide sustainable farming solutions, enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting the livelihoods of local farming families.
