Temperatures cross 50°C in parts of north and central India

In northern and central India, temperatures soar above 50°C amidst a severe heatwave. Over 37 cities across the nation experienced temperatures surpassing 45°C this week.
In Delhi, areas like Narela and Mungeshpur hit a staggering 49.9°C, prompting a severe heatwave alert from India’s weather office for certain parts of the city.

Summers in India stretch from March to September and typically bring hot and humid conditions. However, the weather department warns of longer and more intense heatwaves this year.
Rajasthan and Gujarat experienced nine to twelve days of heatwave conditions this month, with temperatures ranging between 45-50°C.
India’s Bengaluru also faced severe water shortage even before peak summers arrived.
Jaipur’s health department reported three deaths caused by heatstroke, taking the official total toll to four.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a notice warning people to stay hydrated and avoid leaving their homes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
