The Canadian government, aiming to protect its crucial carbon tax from opposition criticism, introduced a new branding strategy.
It highlights that most people receive rebates from the tax on fossil fuels, which has been in place since 2019.
The goal is to speed up the transition to clean energy.
Despite this, officials acknowledge that many Canadians are unaware of the rebates intended to balance the tax’s revenue impact.
The payments will be called Canada Carbon Rebate, previously Climate Action Incentive Payment.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault told reporters, “The previous name was a bit difficult to understand, even for many people to remember. This will likely make it easier.”
Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta, Canada’s main oil-producing province, labeled the rebrand as “an act of desperation.” The move criticized carbon tax, deeming it a failure.
“No ‘rebrand’ will save the federal government from its dwindling poll numbers,” Smith said in a statement.
