The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) announced a partnership designed to accelerate climate adaptation throughout Europe by leveraging Nature-based Solutions (NbS). This initiative is a key part of the EIB WWF Climate solutions.
Established at COP16 in Colombia, this four-year collaboration seeks early-stage funding for NbS projects, which are crucial for advancing EIB WWF Climate solutions.
These projects can enhance Europe’s resilience against climate change challenges, including severe floods and droughts.
Europe, currently the fastest-warming continent, has been experiencing increasingly severe climate events that threaten communities and ecosystems.
The EIB-WWF partnership aims to develop projects that enhance ecosystem health, mitigate climate change, and address biodiversity loss. The focus on EIB WWF Climate solutions underscores the importance of these efforts.
Under the partnership, the EIB and WWF will prioritize ecosystem restoration within the agriculture, energy, and urban planning sectors, providing comprehensive EIB WWF Climate solutions.
By investing in ecosystem health, the projects will improve climate adaptation and help reverse biodiversity decline.

According to the recent WWF Living Planet Report, species populations in Europe and Central Asia have fallen by an average of 35% since 1970, highlighting the urgent need for initiatives supporting biodiversity and climate resilience.
WWF will establish an Incubation Facility to advance NbS projects for investment, aligning them with natural processes.
Ambroise Fayolle, the EIB Vice-President said, “Europe’s adaptation to climate change lags far behind what is needed.”
He added, “We want to support more nature-based-solution projects to restore and protect biodiversity and strengthen the climate resilience of our society. Partnerships with organisations like WWF with a strong presence on the ground are a relevant way for us to help deliver tangible results on a large scale. These initiatives contribute significantly to EIB WWF Climate solutions.”

The partnership aligns with the recent European Union initiatives, including the EU’s new Climate Adaptation Plan and Water Resilience Strategy, both focused on strengthening preparedness and resilience to climate threats.
The EU’s Nature Restoration Law sets binding targets for European habitat and species restoration.
Over the years, the EIB and WWF have worked together on various initiatives to promote biodiversity and climate resilience.
They collaborated with WWF on the Sustainable Blue Economy principles and flood resilience projects in Thessaly, Greece, contributing to the overall EIB WWF Climate solutions.
