QatarEnergy, a petroleum company based in Qatar, partnered with TotalEnergies, an energy company, to jointly develop a significant solar project in Iraq, as part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP). This collaboration further emphasizes the QatarEnergies TotalEnergies solar project in Iraq.
Under this new agreement, subject to regulatory approval, QatarEnergy will acquire a 50 percent share in the solar photovoltaic (PV) project, while TotalEnergies will own the other 50 percent.
This solar project, one of the largest of its kind globally, will incorporate 2 million high-efficiency bifacial solar panels mounted on single-axis trackers, highlighting the significance of the Qatarenergies Totalenergies solar effort in Iraq.

Energy Impact and Future Steps
The project, scheduled for completion between 2025 and 2027, will provide up to 1.25 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy to the Basra region, supplying clean energy to about 350,000 households in a phased manner. This demonstrates the impact of Qatarenergies Totalenergies solar initiative in Iraq.
Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said, “I am pleased to have concluded our entry into this very important project for Iraq’s energy sector, and look forward to working with our strategic partner, TotalEnergies, to progress it to fruition.
He added, “We thank the Iraqi government for their trust, and TotalEnergies for this opportunity to support Iraq’s solar power development.”
In June 2023, QatarEnergy announced its involvement in the GGIP consortium, collaborating with TotalEnergies and Iraq’s Basra Oil Company to enhance energy development and efficiency initiatives.

Environmental Commitment
QatarEnergy holds a 25% stake, partnering with TotalEnergies at 45% and Basra Oil Company with 30%, to improve the development of Iraq’s abundant natural resources effectively, reinforcing the Qatarenergies Totalenergies solar project in Iraq.
The GGIP also focuses on capturing large quantities of flared gas across Basra, thereby supporting Iraq’s energy sector and reducing environmental impact.
