SQM Lithium Ventures has put $9.4 million into Altilium, a British electric vehicle battery recycling company, to help it grow.
This investment came as part of a $12 million Series A funding round. SQM, the world’s second-largest lithium producer, led the funding with $2.6 million last year and contributed most of the latest round through its corporate venture arm.
Altilium is among several companies expanding their recycling operations in Europe.
Most electric vehicle batteries are shredded into ‘black mass’ and sent to China for processing.
With the new funding, Altilium plans to open a plant in England in 2024 to process cathode materials for car manufacturers.
They also aim to establish recycling stations to convert battery cells into black mass and a plant in Eastern Europe to turn black groups into battery materials by the end of 2024.
