TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM signed an agreement where TotalEnergies will supply up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Air France-KLM Group airlines until 2035.
This agreement is one of the biggest SAF purchase agreements that Air France-KLM has signed
demonstrating advancement in cutting CO2 emissions and helping the company achieve its sustainability targets.
Additionally, it expands upon a 2022 memorandum of understanding (MoU) that had set aside 800,000 tons of SAF.
The SAF will be produced from waste and residues using circular economy principles at TotalEnergies’ biorefineries in France and Europe.

By 2030, Air France-KLM wants to reduce its CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 30% from 2019 levels.
They plan to achieve this through fleet renewal, operational improvements, and incorporating at least 10% SAF in total fuel consumption on all flights.
SAF from TotalEnergies will be utilized for flights leaving from European nations, with CO2 emissions predicted to be reduced by 75–90% when compared to fossil fuels.
These initiatives complement Air France-KLM’s sustainability requirements for biofuels of the second generation that have been RSB or ISCC+ approved.
Patrick Pouranne, the Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies said, “SAF contributes both to the energy transition of our customers in the aviation sector and to the industrial transition of our refineries. It therefore represents a real ‘win-win’ for the future of industry and aviation.”
He added, “For the past 10 years, we have been pioneers in the field, investing in biorefineries and SAF production facilities in France as well as developing coprocessing technologies in our refineries. Building on these industrial successes, we intend to continue this momentum in Europe and worldwide.”

Over the past decade, TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have collaborated on SAF initiatives.
TotalEnergies is investing in SAF production in France and Europe, including projects in Grandpuits, Normandy, and La Mède.
These initiatives aim to boost SAF output by 2025, and there are also plans to co-process the product in other refineries around Europe.
