Asian asset owners increasingly prioritise environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) factors in their investment strategies, noted a recent survey conducted by Asianinvestor.
The survey, conducted in Q4 2023, included 29 regional asset owners, primarily from insurance companies and single-family offices/private wealth management, mainly based in Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Korea, with a combined total of $1.13 trillion of Assets under management.
Key findings:
- 85% of respondents intended to boost their portfolio exposure to ESG investments moderately or significantly within the next six to 12 months
- 74% plan a moderate increase (less than 5%) across various asset classes, including fixed income, equities, infrastructure, and private equity
- 11% aim for a significant increase (over 5%)
- 15% intend to maintain current levels
Vivian Tang, head of institutional in Asia Pacific at abrdn, says they also see a growing interest in sustainable investments from institutions across APAC, in line with trends the asset manager has observed in the UK and EU. “They want to understand how to achieve a net-zero target without compromising their risk/return profile and are looking to invest in assets with green revenues and improving carbon emissions trajectories,” Tang told AsianInvestor.
“For example, we see insurers in Asia Pacific have expressed high interest in outsourcing their ESG integration, investment execution, and hedging strategies,” Tang said.
