The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced $63 million to support four transformative energy technologies through the Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy Technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) program.
The four projects receiving the support displayed a “viable path to market and represent technologies focused on aerogels for energy-efficient insulated glass units, thermal batteries to supply combined heat and power from renewable electricity, energy-dense solid-state batteries, and cement decarbonization.

AeroShield Materials from Waltham, MA, will establish a pilot manufacturing facility to produce aerogels for high-efficiency insulated glass units. This will contribute to energy-efficient residential and commercial buildings meeting ENERGY STAR standards.
Antora Energy, based in Sunnyvale, CA, plans to scale up its thermal battery technology. This technology converts low-cost renewable energy into reliable heat and power for industrial use, supporting rapid decarbonization efforts.
Ion Storage Systems, located in Beltsville, MD, will focus on domestic manufacturing of solid-state lithium-metal batteries, aimed at accelerating their adoption in electric vehicles.
Finally, Queens Carbon of Pine Brook, NJ, aims to develop a pilot facility producing carbon-neutral supplemental cementitious materials, crucial for achieving decarbonization in cement production.
All of the above-mentioned projects were recently selected under the SCALEUP program and have received between $14.5 million and $20 million to drive these innovations forward and contribute to sustainable energy solutions.
