The Biden administration has taken steps to further protect parts of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) from oil and gas development. The Interior Department announced the action as part of an effort to safeguard the region’s wildlife and ecosystem.
The administration intends to revoke further industrial exploitation in one of the country’s most ecologically sensitive areas. The efforts to mitigate are the cause behind the expansion of protected areas.

Protection of Wildlife and Subsistence Hunting
The department’s decision to shield the areas of ANWR is intended to preserve the natural habitats of fish and wildlife that are critical to Alaska Native communities. These communities rely on subsistence hunting for their survival.
The acting deputy secretary of the Interior, Laura Daniel Davis, stated that the decision was based on legal requirements. The move also arose from the need to protect wildlife supporting Alaska Native peoples. She emphasised that the region has provided sustenance for thousands of years and is essential to ensure its preservation.
Impact on Oil and Gas
Due to high operational costs and other logistical challenges, the industry has largely backed away from Arctic drilling projects in recent years. Furthermore, the oil and gas auctions held in 2021 and earlier this year saw limited interest from companies.
Moreover, this move is expected to prevent new drilling activities in some regions of ANWR. However, it remains unclear whether the decision will directly impact the interests of the oil and gas industry.
Former President Donald Trump had actively advocated the expansion of oil and gas exploration in ANWR. He had vowed to increase US oil production, which already stands at record highs. His nominee for Interior Secretary, Doug Burgum, argued that restricting US energy output could lead to production being shifted to other countries with fewer environmental safeguards.
Looking Ahead
This decision to strengthen protections in ANWR highlights the tension between environmental concerns and the push for more domestic energy production. The move will make future efforts to expand drilling in the region more complicated.
With this action, the administration is seeking to balance addressing climate change with the needs of Alaska Native communities.
