The government has released guidelines for initiating pilot projects to utilise Green Hydrogen as fuel in buses, trucks, and four-wheelers, marking a significant step towards decarbonizing the transport sector.
Implemented under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, these projects will be overseen by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) and executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Scheme Implementing Agencies (SIAs).
The pilot projects will focus on developing technologies for incorporating Green Hydrogen into various modes of transportation, including buses, trucks, and four-wheelers, utilizing fuel cell-based propulsion and internal combustion engine-based propulsion technologies.
Additionally, the scheme aims to facilitate the creation of necessary infrastructure, such as hydrogen refueling stations, to support the widespread adoption of Green Hydrogen.
By promoting the use of Green Hydrogen in the transport sector, the initiative aims to establish a robust ecosystem for sustainable energy usage, reducing carbon emissions and decreasing reliance on fossil fuel imports.
With a budgetary outlay of Rs 496 Crores until the financial year 2025-26, the scheme is poised to drive innovation and pave the way for India’s transition towards self-reliance in clean energy, aligning with the nation’s broader goal of achieving Aatma Nirbhar status through renewable energy initiatives.
