A new law in New York might soon come into force to encourage the deployment of carbon removal technology in buildings. The New York City Property Tax Abatement Act (S.5450 / A. 777) intends to create a property tax abatement to integrate carbon removal technologies in the city.
The new legislation aims to cover 20% of the capital expenditures (CAPEX) on installing carbon removal technologies in the city.

OpenAir Collective, a collaborative action fighting for the acceleration of carbon removal, is leading a campaign to rally policymakers to pass this crucial legislation before the end of the legislative session in June.
The volunteer-led network is beckoning New Yorkers to voice their support for the bill and contribute to bringing the law into force.
Their strategy is to encourage people to contact their legislators and assembly members. A post on OpenAir’s website details the process and lists three high-impact actions.
One of the high-impact actions includes access to OpenAir’s Mobilizer, which allows for the easy identification of respective State Senators and Assembly members.
With access to OpenAir’s Mobilizer, interested parties can search for the legislators’ contact details and make a phone call. The primary idea behind the calls is that the issue might be prioritized if enough people dial the legislators.
Under the Climate Mobilization Act, all buildings with more than 25,000 square feet are required to meet the carbon reduction targets from 2024. OpenAir Collective believes the S.5450 / A. 777 Act can boost this goal of emission reduction.
