The State Department announced that China’s Special Envoy for Climate Change, Liu Zhenmin, will visit Washington on Wednesday and Thursday.
This meeting fulfils the Biden administration’s plan for US climate envoy John Podesta to meet with Liu in May, restarting discussions on climate cooperation despite ongoing trade and security disputes.
Liu’s visit will be his first to Washington since taking over from veteran climate envoy Xie Zhenhua, who resigned in January due to health issues.

John Kerry and Xie were instrumental in negotiating the final agreement at the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai.
They agreed to a bilateral language between their two countries, which helped secure widespread support among all participating nations for transitioning away from fossil fuels.
Despite periods of tension between the US and China, Kerry and Xie maintained a positive personal relationship and kept an open diplomatic channel focused explicitly on climate change issues.
