The European Investment Bank (EIB) approved a € 50 million loan agreement to Slovenian electricity company, Elektro Ljublijana to support upgrades and expansion of the country’s electricity grid.
The funding will be used for infrastructure improvements in central and southeastern Slovenia between 2024 and 2026.
Elektro Ljublijana serves more than 353,000 people and will use the funds to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of its power distribution network.
The project will include refurbishing and constructing medium and low-voltage overhead lines, underground cables, power transformers, substations, and smart meters.
Elektro Ljubljana aims to integrate new electric vehicle charging stations, renewable energy generators, and heat pumps to promote energy savings.

Kyriacos Kakouris, the Vice President of EIB said, “Expanding and ensuring the reliability of the distribution network is essential to supporting the nation’s electrification efforts, particularly in integrating renewable-energy sources, electric-vehicle charging stations and heat pumps.”
Urban Likozar, Elektro Ljubljana President of the Management Board, stated, “The agreement we have signed today with the EIB is an important step in financing the primary distribution infrastructure to achieve the green transition, meet the objectives of the 10-year network development plan and ensure sufficient capacity for the diversification of renewable energy sources.”

The project aligns with Slovenia’s efforts to fight climate change and support the European Union’s REPowerEU initiative, which seeks to accelerate the green transition.
It is expected to contribute to Slovenia’s 2050 climate targets by increasing the grid’s capacity to accommodate renewable energy.
The project’s total cost is expected to be €164.2 million, with €55.2 million in EU funding and the remainder covered by Elektro Ljubljana.
