Otis, an elevator and escalator manufacturing, installation, and service company in India, has announced the approval of its near-term science-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
The approved targets include:
- A 55% reduction in absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 2033 from a 2021 base year.
- A 33% reduction in absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, business travel, and use of sold products within the same timeframe.
These targets align with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, aiming to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
Judy Marks, Chair, CEO, and President of Otis, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “We are responsible for delivering sustainable value for all stakeholders. At Otis, ESG is firmly embedded in our business strategy and culture.”
The approval from SBTi marks a significant milestone in Otis’s sustainability journey, highlighting its dedication to reducing environmental impact while driving innovation and resilience in its business operations.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a partnership between Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF). SBTi promotes best practices in science-based target setting and independently assesses and approves companies’ targets.
