According to a media release, Holcim ,a sustainable construction company, announced the commencement of the construction of its Net-Zero cement plant in Belgium. The GO4ZERO plant is designed to produce zero emissions and comply with European decarbonization regulations and goals.
The construction sector is one of the most contributing sectors to global carbon emissions and falls into the hard-to-abate category. By establishing the plant, the company is demonstrating its alignment with the pursuit of greener practices in the industry.
The plan is expected to gather an investment of $540 million from the company with the intention of producing more than 2 million tons of Net-Zero cement by 2029. The
The project’s first phase will comprise the implementation of a kiln equipped with air-oxyfuel switchable technology and CO2 purification. The phase’s success is expected to yield a 30% reduction in the intensity of emissions and bridge the gap between the company’s Net-Zero goals.
The following phase will employ Cryocap technology to capture and purify CO2. Then, captured and sequestered CO2 will be stored below the North Sea and sealed to prevent its atmospheric escape and contribute to the toll of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG).

The new plant will be well equipped with innovative and smart technologies that are sustainable. Certain technologies present on the site have features that stand out.
Among the features is the biggest floating solar panel installation in Europe, which marks a testament to Holcim’s seriousness about utilizing renewable energy resources.
In addition, around 30% of the raw material required for the production process will be obtained through partially decarbonized alternative sources. The sources mainly include waste discarded by other industries.
Utilizing such sources reduces dependency on conventional resources and helps reduce the impact of the cement industry’s production process on the environment.
Top officials in the region laud Holcim’s approaches and contribution towards climate change. Previously, the EU Innovation Fund selected Holcim’s Net-Zero plant initiative to be awarded with $230 million as funds.
The fund awarded with assistance from the EU Emissions Trading System is one of the leading global initiatives offering monetary aid to pioneering low-carbon advancements.
