Arizona utility Salt River Project adds two additional battery storage systems
Arizona utility Salt River Project (SRP) and Plus Power LLC announced the addition of two battery storage systems. The two systems—Sierra Estrella Energy Storage and Superstition Energy Storage— will add 340 megawatts (MW) to SRP’s system.
The release mentions that Plus Power designed the facilities and will oversee the operations.
According to the release, the 250 MW Sierra Estrella Energy Storage facility is SRP’s largest grid-tied battery and currently the “largest standalone battery in Arizona.”
The battery system, which is spread out across nine acres in Avondale, can store the power required to run 56,000 homes for four hours.
When the electricity demand is low, the batteries absorb excess energy and store it for use when the demand is high.

The second storage system, the 90 MW Superstition Energy Storage facility, can store energy sufficient to power more than 20,000 homes for four hours. It is anticipated to come online this week.
Jim Pratt, CEO at SRP, said, “We appreciate our partnership with Plus Power to develop these resources, which will provide flexibility and resource diversity to help maintain reliable power during Arizona’s hot summers. We are proud to be leading the way with integrating new energy technology to serve our customers.”
The projects were aided by a federal investment tax credit from the Inflation Reduction Act.
