Repsol, Iberia, and Inditex team up to use SAF, advancing decarbonization
Multi-energy company Repsol and Iberia Airlines Group have signed an agreement with Inditex, a global fashion retail group, for the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which represents 5% of the fuel that Iberia uses to transport Inditex’s merchandise on its flights.
Iberia has completed its first purchase of SAF for use in Inditex’s cargo operations, with Repsol supplying the fuel directly at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport.
Using this fuel would reduce emissions by over 80% compared to the fossil kerosene it replaces.
Iberia said the three companies are committed to using SAF as a key tool to decarbonize the aviation sector. It added that Repsol’s fuel is certified and complies with the standards of Annex IX Part B of the Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001 II of the European Union.
Carlos Suárez, Repsol’s Director of International Aviation, said, “The first large-scale production of 100% renewable fuels in Cartagena was a milestone in our strategy. This plant, which produces both 100% renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuels, will allow Repsol to be ready to supply the aviation sector with the SAF it needs to achieve its decarbonization plans.”

Teresa Parejo, Iberia’s Head of Sustainability, added, “This agreement with Inditex is part of our commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. It is a great challenge that must be addressed on a global scale, and that will only be achieved thanks to collaborations like this one between Iberia and Inditex.”
SAF can be either organic, sourced from vegetable oils, animal fats, biomass, and other wastes like agricultural byproducts, or synthetic, produced through CO2 capture and green hydrogen.
