Private energy company DTEK has agreed with Fluence Energy B.V., the world’s leading provider of energy storage solutions, to deliver the Ukraine’s first large portfolio of battery-based energy storage systems. This giant step toward a more independent and stable power supply for Ukraine will leave behind an important milestone on the way to creating a more secure, renewable-energy-based grid.
Strategic Partnership for Energy Independence
DTEK signed a partnership agreement with Fluence to implement a large-scale energy storage project through DTEK Renewables. This will further fortify the power grid in Ukraine, making it less susceptible to outages, especially over winter. The project is part of DTEK’s #FightforLight campaign ensuring energy is continually supplied despite ongoing challenges of war.
Fluence, a Fluence Energy company, will bring its capabilities in energy storage, operation service, and asset optimization to the project. The six energy storage plants are set to be completed by October 2025 to stabilize the national grid with critical storage.
Project Details and Capacity
There will be six energy storage plants distributed throughout Ukraine. Their capacities will be between 20 MW to 50 MW, and overall, this will total a capacity of 200 MW. The combined storage capacity will amount to up to 400 MWh. That would power close to 600,000 homes for two hours. This storage capacity will provide essential backup power during grid imbalances, ensuring reliability in Ukraine’s energy system.
Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, said, “Battery storage is a critical element in Ukraine’s vision to build a decentralised energy system that reduces our emissions and enhances our energy security. The partnership with Fluence further signals our commitment to leading the way in battery storage, both in Ukraine and across Europe.”
Enhancing Grid Stability and Speed of Response
The battery storage systems will primarily serve to provide frequency regulation and power balancing services for Ukraine’s grid. Unlike traditional power plants, these systems respond in milliseconds, offering a faster, more efficient solution to grid instability. This rapid response will reduce power outage risks, helping the system stabilize and recover faster at the local level.
Along with frequency regulation, the battery assets will include grid-forming technology, enhancing grid stability with this advanced capability. This innovative functionality positions Ukraine as a global leader in utilizing advanced battery storage technology to fortify its energy infrastructure.
