A lawsuit was filed by the residents of the Dutch-Caribbean island of Bonaire, on Thursday, against the Dutch state demanding the government take more effective measures to mitigate climate change.
The residents, which consist of eight plaintiffs, want the Netherlands to cut its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040 and address the measures taken to protect the state against rising sea levels.
Both of which have not been taken care of by the government, according to the residents.
“The Caribbean Netherlands has been forgotten for too long. There are plans in place to protect the European Netherlands against sea-level rise and other consequences of the climate crisis, but for Bonaire, this is not yet the case,” plaintiff Danique Martis said in a statement.
The environmentalist action group Greenpeace supports the case that is filed. The group also said that some parts of Bonaire are highly likely to be completely submerged by 2050 and that the country’s protective coral barrier is fading away.
