Iveco Group, an Italian bus and truck maker, has partnered with German chemicals group BASF for the recycling of lithium-ion batteries for their electric vehicles.
BASF’s “broad battery collection network and recycling capabilities in Europe will help us close the loop from end-of-life batteries to new ones,” Iveco’s Chief Supply Chain Officer Angela Qu said in the statement.
Under the agreement with Iveco, BASF will manage the complete recycling process for lithium-ion batteries used in the Italian group’s electric vans, buses, and trucks.
This includes collecting, packaging, transporting, and recycling the batteries in various European countries.
BASF will mechanically process the batteries into a “black mass,” extracting and reusing raw materials like nickel, cobalt, and lithium. The recycled metals will be supplied to the local battery industry in Europe.
No financial details of the agreement have been disclosed yet by the company.
