The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a pioneer in promoting standardized Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, has unveiled its latest initiative – a dedicated reporting standard tailored for the mining sector.
This move aims to empower mining companies to disclose a comprehensive range of sustainability impacts, spanning from emissions and biodiversity to community welfare and human rights.
The introduction of the GRI 14: Mining Sector 2024 standard responds to growing stakeholder demand for transparency regarding the mining industry’s contributions and impacts on sustainable development.
Recognizing the sector’s dual role as both a vital source of essential minerals and metals and a potential contributor to environmental and social challenges, the standard seeks to strike a balance by facilitating accountability and transparency.
Carol Adams, Chair of GRI’s Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB), highlighted the complexity of the mining industry’s sustainability landscape. She emphasized the sector’s crucial role in enabling the low-carbon transition while acknowledging the need to address its adverse impacts on nature and communities.
The new standard, part of GRI’s broader initiative to develop sector-specific reporting standards, encompasses 25 material topics relevant to mining companies.
These include emissions, waste management, human rights, climate change, and community engagement. Notably, the standard covers previously unaddressed issues such as tailings management, artisanal and small-scale mining, and operations in conflict zones.
Developed through a collaborative effort involving diverse stakeholders from businesses, investors, labor groups, civil society, and mediating institutions, the standard integrates insights from responsible mining guidance and relevant industry standards.
Inputs from organizations such as the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), and International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) have contributed to its robust framework.
The GRI’s latest initiative underscores its commitment to fostering transparency and accountability in the mining sector, facilitating informed decision-making, and driving progress towards sustainable practices.
