Automotive Cells Co (ACC), a joint venture between Stellantis, TotalEnergies, and Mercedes-Benz Group, has joined forces with UK startup Circulor to verify the origin and embedded carbon emissions of raw materials used in electric vehicle (EV) battery cells.
ACC, founded in 2020, has invested 7 billion euros in EV battery plants across France, Germany, and Italy, with mass production in the French facility set to commence soon.
Circulor, known for using blockchain technology to map greener supply chains, has existing partnerships with companies like Volvo Cars, BMW, and BHP.
The collaboration aligns with the impending “battery passport” initiative in Europe, mandating disclosure of EV cell content and carbon footprint, starting this year.
European battery manufacturers, striving to differentiate from Chinese competitors, face increasing pressure to demonstrate environmentally friendly practices, comply with emissions limits, and disclose recycled raw material content by 2027.
Circulor’s CEO, Douglas Johnson-Poensgen, notes the industry’s shift towards responsible sourcing as regulations intensify, signaling an “arms race” in the pursuit of sustainable and transparent supply chains.
