The Indian central government has introduced a ‘Framework for Voluntary Carbon Market in Agriculture Sector and Accreditation Protocol of Agroforestry Nurseries’ to encourage voluntary carbon markets in the agriculture sector.
Launched by the Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Tribal Affairs, Arjun Munda, the initiative aims to enable small and medium farmers to benefit from carbon credits.
“Introducing farmers to the carbon market will not only benefit them but also accelerate the adoption of environment-friendly agricultural practices,” the minister said.
The move seeks to integrate farmers into carbon markets, providing economic incentives for emission reduction in agriculture.
Munda emphasized the importance of global cooperation in addressing challenges like global warming and urged the Indian Institute of Agricultural Research to play an active role.
The launch is the initial step, with further details awaited on its implementation within the sector.
Approximately 54.6% of India’s workforce is engaged in agriculture, contributing 18.6% to the GDP. The accreditation protocol for agroforestry nurseries was also introduced to strengthen institutional arrangements for planting material production and certification.
