As part of its commitment to sustainability, Airbus showcased its A350-1000 aircraft utilizing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) during the Singapore Airshow 2024, held from Feb 20 to Feb 22.
Supplied by Shell Aviation, the SAF used in the aircraft is a 35 per cent blend, incorporating used cooking oil and animal fats alongside regular jet fuel.
At Changi Airport on Feb 18, the A350-1000 was refueled with approximately 12.8 tonnes of blended SAF, marking a significant step in promoting eco-friendly aviation practices.
SAF is lauded for its potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent from production to end-use, making it a more environmentally conscious alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
Airbus emphasized its ongoing commitment to integrating SAF into its aircraft operations, noting that all its aircraft are already capable of operating with up to 50 per cent SAF, the current maximum allowable ratio.
To further enhance sustainability, Airbus aims for its aircraft to operate with up to 100 per cent SAF by 2030.
In a symbolic gesture underscoring its dedication to decarbonization, the Airbus A350-1000 flew from its headquarters in Toulouse, France, to Singapore using a blend of 90 tonnes of fuel incorporating SAF.
This demonstration underscores Airbus’s proactive efforts to advance sustainable aviation solutions and reduce its environmental footprint.
