ARENA funds Amber Electric for Vehicle-to-Grid trial
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) announced in a press release that it will provide $3.2 million in funding to Amber Electric to test out battery electric vehicle (BEV) smart charging and provide vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services with residential customers.
Amber is developing a software system to facilitate BEV smart charging and V2G bidirectional charging for residential customers.
The release states that the company is developing the charging systems through this “Australian-first residential trial.”
Amber’s trial involved installing 100 smart chargers and 50 V2G chargers in the trial participants’ homes.

Amber co-CEO Dan Adams said, “This technology represents a transformative leap for energy storage in Australia and the energy system as a whole. By integrating electric vehicles with the grid and the wholesale energy market, we can reduce costs for consumers whilst accelerating the transition to renewable energy.”
ARENA’s funding will facilitate the development and deployment of the software solution and the rollout of chargers.
This initiative enables trial participants to transform their vehicles into mobile batteries, strengthening grid stability and enhancing the integration of renewable energy.
