Renewable energy produced more than one-third of Australia’s electricity in the first quarter of 2024, marking a record high for solar and wind farms during this peak summer demand period.
According to data from energy think tank Ember, solar farms generated 13.11 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in Q1 2024, a 13.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Wind power generated 7.53 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in the first quarter of 2024, showing a 6.5% increase compared to the same quarter in the previous year.
This contributed to a total renewable energy output of 20.64 TWh during the quarter, marking the highest first-quarter total on record.

Solar and wind production totals in the first quarter of 2024 were the second highest ever recorded for a quarter, following the final quarter of 2023.
This indicates that Australia’s significant expansion of utility-scale clean energy generation capacity is significantly influencing the country’s generation mix.
