Cepsa and PreZero Spain partner to convert waste into biomethane and biofuels
Cepsa announced that it has entered a strategic partnership with PreZero Spain to advance objectives related to decarbonization.
According to the agreement, PreZero Spain will provide Cepsa with biomethane from some of its projects, and then the two organisations will work towards developing biomethane plants.
In addition, Cepsa and PreZero will work on the “recovery of waste to produce second-generation biofuels and circular chemical products and to decarbonise the land fleet operated by PreZero in Spain and Portugal”, the announcement mentions.
Both companies are already working on developing a biomethane plant located in the province of Huelva. This facility being developed is reported to have an annual capacity of up to 100 GWh, which could suffice the heating needs of around 20,000 homes.
This renewable energy installation will be among the biggest in Spain and will be utilized for the production of green hydrogen and renewable fuels.

Cepsa will construct the facility in Palos de la Frontera, where the company has an Energy Park and is currently constructing the biggest 2G biofuels plant in southern Europe to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel.
The company also aims to establish a green hydrogen plant with a capacity of 1 GW as part of the Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley at the Energy Park, which also houses a chemical plant.
PreZero, a major biomethane producer in Spain, will supply Cepsa with renewable gas for mutually identified strategic projects, aiding in the decarbonization of industrial processes.
This gas can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to natural gas and has similar characteristics, allowing it to be seamlessly integrated into the existing gas transport network.

Additionally, Cepsa will obtain biogenic CO2 from PreZero Spain’s biomethane plants for synthetic fuel production.
As part of this partnership, PreZero will recover organic waste and used cooking oils for Cepsa to produce second-generation biofuels, aiding the immediate decarbonization of difficult-to-electrify sectors such as heavy road, maritime, or air transport.
PreZero will recycle plastic waste, including single-use plastics, to provide Cepsa with the raw materials needed for producing circular chemical products.
Both companies will explore the potential development of pyrolysis plants to handle this kind of unrecyclable plastic waste.
