China has established an objective to manufacture over 50% of the world’s ships utilizing cleaner fuels by 2025, as outlined in guidelines released by the industry ministry on Thursday.
Specific figures regarding the number of ships were not provided.
However, the guidelines outlined China’s intention to construct more vessels using lower-carbon fuels such as methanol and liquefied natural gas, aligning with Beijing’s broader initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
“Implement innovation in ship engines, improve the efficiency of traditional fuel and LNG marine engines, and steadily increase the use of LNG in marine engines at scale,” the document issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.
Key enterprises have advanced in diminishing pollution and carbon emissions, as evidenced by a 13.5% reduction in comprehensive energy consumption per 10,000 yuan from the levels observed in 2020.
The transformation of the shipping industry in terms of environmental improvements is slated to be concluded by 2030, according to the statement.
