Dubai Municipality partners with global companies to produce SAF
Dubai Municipality has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global corporations during the World Governments Summit 2024 to revolutionise waste management practices in Dubai.
The innovative project outlined in the MoU utilizes advanced technologies to treat mixed solid municipal waste, organic waste, and green hydrogen derived from sewage treatment processes, ultimately producing sustainable aviation fuel.
This initiative aligns with the UAE’s sustainability policy, demonstrating the country’s commitment to environmental protection, resource conservation, and combating climate change through pioneering strategies that contribute to national environmental objectives.
Signed by Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, alongside key representatives from ENOC, BESIX Middle East, and Marubeni Middle East and Africa Power Limited, the MoU underscores a collective effort to expedite carbon removal from the aviation sector and elevate the UAE’s position as a regional hub for low-carbon aviation fuel.
Al Hajri emphasized the project’s significance in waste management operations, aligning with strategic initiatives such as the UAE Net Zero by 2050, the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, and the 2031 National Hydrogen Policy.
The collaboration underscores Dubai Municipality’s commitment to advancing sustainable waste management solutions, enhancing recycling rates, and positioning Dubai as a global leader in embracing sustainable practices.
Set for implementation in July 2025, the project relies on leveraging essential materials within Dubai Municipality, including waste and treated sewage water, with the participation of various investors and strategic partners.
This initiative signifies a pivotal step towards creating a more sustainable city and fostering global leadership in sustainable development for future generations.
